Bedford mirrors Kidderminster's determination

'Bedford-based Consultant Dematologist BARRY MONK, after 31 years as a Doctor in the NHS, is challenging the political establishment'
said the Birmingham Post in a feature article  . . . (Wednesday October 4th 2006)

" ... our hospital is a good one; 2 years ago we were awarded a 'three star' rating (making us one of the best in the country) and our books balanced !"

"Now we face a deficit of £16,000,000 . . . half of which arose because we were doing too much work . . . the other half arose because of penalties through overspending - on redundancy payouts made in an attempt to balance the books !"

"Six of our Consultants have retired and have not been replaced . . . next month the Consultant i/c Stroke Treatment retires . . . there's no money to replace any of these positions."

Yet at the same time . . . "we have four teams of Management Consultants 'working' at Bedford Hospital . . . being paid 'Footballers' salaries."

"I am the chairman of the Consultants Committee and I have tried and failed to engage our Labour MP."

"So now I'm setting out in another direction: two weeks ago I announced with a group of my colleagues,

A NEW POLITICAL PARTY-

"SAVE BEDFORD HOSPITAL"

and will be fighting the local parliamentary seat at the next General Election."

"I am well aware that I have started on a long and difficult journey . . . but it will be well worth the effort."

HEALTH CONCERN wish Barry every success and support for his campaign.
