WOLVERLEY VISIT A SUCCESS

Despite several failed attempts by our political opponents, including a misguided complaint to the police, the scheduled visit to Wolverley by Dr Taylor, Howard Martin and Nigel Addison, took place as planned on Wednesday April 11th, and has been hailed a great success.

The visit started with a look around the Wolverley First school, and after firing off many questions to head teacher Peter Mountford, Dr Taylor said he had been able to gain valuable information about the effects the Education review was having, and how matters were progressing. Both Richard and Howard were well impressed with the school and its facilities, which Nigel himself had attended in the past.

From there the group headed to Knight Court residential home, where we were welcomed by Waterloo Housing Management and residents, and joined them for coffee and a chat. Dr Taylor also had the chance to meet local historian Mike Webster, who is raising funds for a memorial to all those connected to the old Wolverley Army Camp (see www.wolverleycamp.org.uk).

Somewhat behind schedule we moved on to the Arboretum at Wolverley, which was very busy with visitors enjoying the beautiful surroundings in fine weather (see www.bodenham-arboretum.co.uk) However, our apologies are sent to owner James Binnian who had waited to welcome us, but due to our very late running had needed to carry on with his business.

Having had our lunch meeting with the Drakelow Preservation Trust cancelled due to one of their group having an urgent business meeting, we moved on to the village centre to meet local postmaster and newsagent Richard Watkins, where Dr Taylor had the opportunity to discuss problems facing rural post offices, and planned closures. We were pleased to hear that this office had no imminent closure plans, which the whole group were pleased to hear, and hoped would be the case for many many years in the future.

To round off the morning, we all sat in the sunshine outside the Queens Head in the village centre for a quick sandwich, before Richard had to rush off to attend to very urgent constituency business, but not before he had chance to chat to the licensee about the proposed no smoking ban, and how it will effect the licensed trade.

"I would like to thank everyone who made the day possible" said Nigel, "and especially those who gave up their valuable time to make us welcome. I certainly think the trip was very educational for Richard and Howard, and now feel sure that when I join the ranks of the Health Concern District Councillors in May, I will have the backing of Howard in my attempts to get better funding and services for the area."
